Colin Furness, MISt, Ph.D., MPH

Director of Research and Knowledge Development at Infonaut, Inc.

With graduate degrees in both information systems design and epidemiology, Dr. Furness is the Director of Research and Knowledge Development at Infonaut Inc., a Toronto-based maker of systems for community-level infectious disease surveillance and for hospital infection control. He is a co-inventor of Hospital Watch Live (HWL), a real-time system for tracking the behavior and movement of staff, patients and equipment in hospital settings.

Dr. Furness is considered a leading Canadian expert on hand hygiene measurement. In addition to appearing on national television news broadcasts, he has co-authored two peer-reviewed publications in 2014 using data produced by HWL: one quantified the Hawthorne Effect for hand hygiene compliance auditing, the other providing the first-ever pervasive measurement of hospital patient hand hygiene. Dr. Furness is also an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto, and maintains a small, consulting practice, advising clients on information systems effectiveness, both inside and outside of healthcare.

This week, the Canadian Patient Safety Institute hosted Canadian Patient Safety Week, which focuses on and encourages healthcare professionals, patients, and their families to ask questions, listen to answers and talk about concerns and ways to improve patient safety. This week serves as an important reminder that patient hands also play a role in overall patient safety.
